POEM - Nature’s greatest wonder (2020)

I remember the first time we met,

Your leaves were fully grown,

And I was still a seed,

We were the same type of tree,

They said.

How could it be that I was so small,

And you were so tall,

But yet we were the same?

You taught me about life,

Love,

And everything in between.

I copied you,

I mimicked how your leaves blew in the wind,

Both carelessly,

And carefully.

I made it my goal to have the thickest skin,

so I could be as strong as you.

I wanted to be mesmerising,

beautiful,

just like you!

We spent years together,

But time slowed down,

I continued to grow as you withered away,

I was terrified.

I wish I could have changed things,

Maybe I could give you the water that you gave to me,

Give you the sunlight you needed so desperately,

Give you the love that every tree needed to grow,

but it wouldn’t work.

Why was it fair that my life could go on,

While yours was almost gone?

Your last moments were just as beautiful as your first,

Your leaves dropped one by one,

They knew they didn’t need to guard me anymore.

Your branches were rough in the places they snapped,

But they were still beautiful,

To me.
